Taking the moments with the help from the photographer is familiar to us. The "Sports" or "Action" settings of a digital camera are not the only things you can use or do to get great sporting photos. In the digital photography of sport the user has a much larger l role to play than in other types of photography as the timing of the photos have to be perfect - and there is just a split second in which to take it.
When taking pictures of a game being played on a large field there are two ways of ensuring that you are ready at the right time a second's delay could cost you the photo you have been waiting for.
Your first option is to follow the action as it moves around the field with your camera ready to take the photo the moment the action you want to capture occurs - this is the best way of taking picture of sports where the action can occur anywhere, like hockey and football. The other way is better for games where you can predict where the action will occur - the home plate in a baseball game or the basket in a basketball game - and can keep the camera pointed in that direction so you can click when the action moves into the frame.
No matter how fast your trigger finger is on the shutter button, there will always be a time lag between the button being pressed and the picture being taken as the camera will need to set itself to take the picture. This may take only a few tenths of a second, but that is enough for you to miss the exact moment you want to capture - how long does a slam dunk take? The solution to this is the keep the shutter button half pressed - this keeps the camera continually resetting itself and reduces even the split second time lag. Another tip is the use the "burst" or "continuous" mode where the camera will continue to take a rapid series of pictures for as long as the button is pressed. You will get a chain of pictures of the event and can then pick the best ones to keep.
Another cause of camera delays in the digital photography of sports is that until the previous photos has been written to the memory card, the next one cannot be taken - a memory card with a slow write time will delay the taking of your next picture. Always use memory cards with a fast write time to reduce the time delay between pictures.
